Dr. Desirae Hendricks Patterson

 

Welcome to Howard Norman Elementary! My name is Dr. Desirae Hendricks Patterson, but most of our students and families know me simply as Dr. DHP. I am honored to serve as the principal of Howard Norman Elementary School and proud to lead a campus where every child is valued, challenged, and celebrated.  My favorite part of being principal is getting to see your smiles and celebrate your successes—big and small!

I began my career in education in 2015 as a high school science teacher and later transitioned into elementary leadership, where I found my passion for cultivating a love of learning from the very beginning of a student’s journey. In 2025, I earned my Doctorate of Education from the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, with research focused on how the educational experiences of Black caretakers shape their interactions with schools.

My staff and I believe that every child can learn and succeed when given the right supports, high expectations, and a caring environment. Together, we are committed to building strong relationships with families, providing engaging instruction aligned to state standards, and nurturing students academically, socially, and emotionally. I also live by my personal motto, BET—Believe in the goodness of people, Engage authentically with others, and Teach in every moment—which guides how I lead and serve our school community.

I am the proud wife of Chauncey Patterson and mom to Heaven Patterson, who inspires me daily. Outside of school, I am active in service as an executive member of The Dream Out Loud Experience (D.O.L.E.), a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, and through several faith-based organizations.

I am excited about the year ahead and the opportunity to partner with families to inspire excellence in academics, character, and community at Howard Norman Elementary. My door is always open, and I look forward to working together to ensure our students reach their fullest potential.
